Snow begins to fall in the Tri-States, slick roads reported

QUINCY (WGEM) - Snow began falling in the Tri-States Tuesday morning shortly before 11 a.m. The National Weather Service had issued Winter Weather Advisory for Knox, Lewis and Shelby County in Missouri until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Snow falling in Canton Tuesday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for until noon on Wednesday for Hancock and McDonough County in Illinois. An advisory for Lee County, Iowa, Scotland and Clark County, Missouri, was upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning on Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service attributed to upgrade to snow accumulations of one to two inches with three possible in some locations. and a higher ice accumulation forecast of .2 inches to .4 inches. The National Weather service also stated that heavy ice and gusty winds of 25 to 30 mph could cause tree limbs break and cause potential power outages in these areas.

The Blanchette Missouri River Bridge is undergoing a major rehabilitation that has restricted the five-lane eastbound bridge to just two lanes. The $35 million project is necessary due to the age of the bridge, which opened in 1978. The last repairs were completed in 2006. It was built in the early ‘70s, said Andy Tuerck, St. Charles area engineer of the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). It needs a major rehab about every 20 years. The biggest component is paint replacement. I make the analogy, ‘You can put a layer of shingles on top of your old shingles when you have hail damage. But you can t just keep adding shingles. Likewise, you can t keep adding paint. You can t just keep layering it up and layering it up. It doesn t end up protecting the steel.

New Highway AD Bridge Open, Work Planned on Highway 50

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson called it the worst bridge he saw on a statewide tour in 2019.  Now the Highway AD bridge between St. Clair and Union has been replaced, with the new span over Happy Sac Creek open to traffic. The $1.4 million bridge project was completed in November, with the exception of some backfill and signs needing to be installed. Work started in January. “The project went well,” said Stephen O’Connor, Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) area engineer for Franklin and Jefferson counties. The old bridge was built in 1958, with 600 vehicles crossing it each day, according to MoDOT. It had been repaired several times over the years, including rebuilding its support columns and repairing most of the bridge deck, but it still was built on a curve with limited sight distance.

Completion of Livingston County s Thompson River Bridge delayed

Chillicothe News The Thompson River Bridge on Route 190, just west of Chillicothe, has been narrowed to one-lane traffic since March 2020. Crews had anticipated completion by the end of the day Dec. 11, but construction delays have pushed that back by one week. Comanche Construction Inc., working with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), now anticipates opening the bridge to two-way traffic by the end of the day on Friday, Dec. 18. According to a MoDOT press release, the rehabilitation of this bridge is included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state.
