Dublin s Q102 By Mike Gilmore A status yellow forest fire warning is in place from March 1st - September 1st, which is the traditional fire outbreak season in Ireland.
The state forestry agency, Coillte, is reminding the public of the dangers of outdoor fires this Easter bank holiday weekend.
Between 2016 and 2020, almost 6,000 acres of forest has been damaged by fires, with 584 forest fires on Coillte lands over the same period.
Coillte explains that around 99% of forest fires are started by people, whether it s barbeques or unattended fires in people s back gardens.
With warmer and dryer Spring weather, dead grasses, gorse and heather become much more flammable and fires can spread quickly from open lands to forests.
