Five Massena school board candidates to be part of Tuesday forum

MASSENA — Five candidates are running for two open seats on the Massena Central School Board of Education, and the community will have an opportunity to meet them during a candidate forum scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Massena Community Center. The seats are currently held by board President Patrick Bronchetti, who is not seeking another term, and incumbent Kristy Baker. She had been elected to a one-year term in 2020 to fill out a five-year term for former board member Jason Premo, who resigned his seat in February 2020. Following his resignation, the board appointed Patrick Serguson to serve until Ms. Baker’s election in May 2020.

Massena Central High School band director recognized by National Band Association

MASSENA — Massena Central High School’s band director has received national recognition for his work with student musicians. Jonathan Hunkins received the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence in January, and the accolades started pouring in this week after Principal Alan Oliver learned of the recognition and posted it on social media. Mr. Hunkins said he was talking to Mr. Oliver one morning and the Citation of Excellence was one of the topics of discussion. “I kind of mentioned that I had been given this award from NBA,” he said. After he found out, Mr. Oliver posted his congratulations Sunday morning on the high school’s Facebook page.
