No charges for officers who shot kidnapping suspect at Crestview McDonalds

The law enforcement officers who shot and killed a kidnapping suspect from Massachusetts at a Crestview McDonald’s in November 2020 will not face criminal charges.  The State Attorney’s Office announced in a press release Monday that the use of force in the killing of Luis Roberto Barboza by Investigator Casey Dennis, Deputy Michael Ramirez, Investigator Richard Ghigliotty and Investigator Chris Forehand was “justifiable and was necessary self-defense and defense of others.”  The decision was reportedly based on a review of the investigative report provided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.  The report states that on Nov. 5, 2020, the FDLE Pensacola Regional Operations Center responded to a shooting involving a U.S. Marshals Service task force in the parking lot of a McDonald’s on South Ferdon Boulevard.

Mashpee Selectmen To Form Committee To Address Violence Against Women

The Mashpee Board of Selectmen voted unanimously during its virtual meeting on Monday, April 12, to form an ad hoc committee to review the issue of violence and abuse against women in the community. Murylo Batista, a Mashpee resident and public health researcher, told the selectmen at their meeting that “four homicides in the past year of Mashpee women or of women in Mashpee has shown that the safety and well-being of women are being jeopardized in our town.” “We cannot approach the problem of violence from the perspective of failure—that we, Mashpee, failed somehow—because it extenuates feelings of blame and guilt which are not useful or relevant for building solutions,” Mr. Batista said. “Personally I’m not okay living in a world where our mothers, our sisters and our daughters are not safe, so today I invite the board of selectmen, the town administrators and the residents of Mashpee in declaring that violence has no place at home.”

Sen Markey Offers Help, Praise To Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Vaccine Rollout

US Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts) met with Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal leaders on Tuesday, April 6, and toured the tribe’s government center and health clinic after passage of the American Rescue Plan, which he said invests $31.2 billion in resources for Native American communities. Working in close coordination with the tribe, the Indian Health Service, a division within the US Department of Health and Human Services, has rolled out a program that has vaccinated tribal members, their immediate families and Mashpee public school teachers. “We have seen how indigenous communities across the country have surpassed states in vaccination in many places,” Sen. Markey said, praising the tribe for vaccinating many of its own members and staff in the Mashpee public school system. “We congratulate you on that and the leadership that you are showing.”
