For the past two and a half years, Officer Daniel Girard would get ready for his 16-hour shift by putting on his uniform, protective vest and badge. He s also donned a new tool over the past few weeks that could help increase the department’s transparency and allow for further evidence a body camera.
The Mashpee Police Department implemented its body camera pilot program on Dec. 1. Officers who volunteered will wear body cameras during their shifts. After one year, the department will review the pilot program and decide whether to make body cameras permanent for all officers.
Mashpee is the first police department on the Cape to implement the use of body cameras.
Andrew Baily, the son of his neighbor, Cheryl Crowell, entered the building and allegedly strangled his neighbor.
Baily was “like a crazy person,” Ortiz said on Saturday. “I feel very bad about the situation.”
Crowell, 60, was found in her apartment a short time later after Mashpee police received numerous 911 calls reporting a disturbance at the apartment complex, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline announced in a statement on Friday.
The police arrived at 1 Wampanoag Drive around 11:12 a.m. and foundBaily, 25, acting erratically, the statement said.
When police entered Crowell’s apartment, they found her unresponsive in a bedroom. She was brought to Falmouth Hospital, where she died, according to the statement.

Cheryl Crowell was found unresponsive in a bedroom late Friday morning, and later died at a hospital, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline said in a statement.
When police responding to multiple calls about a disturbance arrived at the apartment complex, they found Andrew Baily, 26, “acting erratically,” the statement said.
Baily was arrested on charges of murder, strangulation and assault and battery in his mother’s death. He’s scheduled to be arraigned next week, the statement said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
