Rebuilding From the Failures of Vision Zero
Vision Zero pledges in New York City and Washington, D.C. have failed to slow the carnage on streets and roads traffic fatalities are only increasing. It s time to start over.
Like many local advocacy organizations, we’re waiting for Mayor Muriel Bowser’s budget to drop. It’s likely to come out May 27, to account for as-of-yet unreleased guidance on federal relief funds. But before budget season is the DC Council’s performance oversight process, during which councilmembers question the agencies they oversee.
Oversight is, arguably, just as important as the budget. Councilmembers typically question agencies about the work they do, how they do it, how they deliver the services they provide, and whether or not they are performing well, which allows them to better understand the resources, financial or otherwise, that they need to carry out their work.

Bowser said indoor theaters will open at 25 percent capacity, restaurants can host live entertainment outside and recreational facilities will reopen by the first week of May.
A local governing body hosted D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to share updates about the District’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts during a meeting Wednesday.
Bowser and several D.C. agency directors spoke at the Foggy Bottom and West End Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, where commissioners also approved a Virginia Avenue bike lane and budgeted $12,000 in grants for local nonprofit organizations. Bowser discussed the city’s progress with reopening venues, like indoor movie theaters, and reiterated her support for D.C. statehood before the U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to make D.C. the 51st state.

In our first post, we outlined how, six years in, DC’s Vision Zero program can only be described as a failure. While there have been some marginal improvements to the city’s transportation infrastructure, it has been nowhere near enough to slow the number of deaths on our streets in fact, they’ve been increasing. If we are going to engage in a genuine effort to eliminate traffic deaths and injuries, we need bold, system-wide solutions that tackle the District’s biggest safety concerns. We must disrupt an inequitable, environmentally unsound, and car-centered status quo.
