All non-urgent surgery for children at Christchurch Hospital has been halted.

Canterbury District Health Board chief medical officer Dr Helen Skinner said on Sunday, 60 of the 340 people who came to the emergency department were suffering respiratory issues.
Skinner could not confirm all of those had RSV, but the number of confirmed cases in the city had soared.
Four people are in intensive care with respiratory illness.
Skinner said deferring surgeries was a last resort bid to free up beds and staff for acutely unwell people.
The drug-buying agency Pharmac yesterday said that more supply of the steroid medication Prednisolone has been brought in after use of the oral medicine to treat children with RSV pushed it to critically low levels.

The Health Select Committee of Parliament responded late
last month to the petition (signed by more than 46,000
people) for a rescue helicopter to be based on the
Coromandel over the busy holiday periods. The committee took
into account written and verbal submissions from both the
National Ambulance Sector Office (NASO) and Whitianga
residents Stephan Bosman (the “petitioner”), Walter
Russell and Kevin Pringle.
The Select Committee’s
response to the petition is promising. They recognised
“…the complexity of delivering road and air ambulance
services in regions like the Coromandel, with widely
dispersed populations, separated by rural and often winding

Waikato District Health Board has taken its biggest step forward in its COVID-19 vaccination programme, with the blessing of its largest vaccination centre.
At full capacity, the Te Awa site at The Base in Hamilton, will be able to vaccinate up to 1000 people a day, seven days a week. The centre will be by appointment only, with the first vaccinations to begin on 20 July.
