CADILLAC â Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are at their peak in the Munson Healthcare region, the healthcare system s medical director said Tuesday.
Cases are increasing, and while the positivity rate has dropped very slightly, said Dr. Christine Nefcy, our cases per 100,000 continue to increase, and our hospitalizations continue to increase.
As of midnight Tuesday, there were 100 patients positive for COVID-19 in a Munson hospital. That is the highest number of inpatients we ve had since this pandemic started, Dr. Nefcy said.
Munson Medical Center had 61 of those patients while Cadillac Hospital had 14.
Tuesday saw Wexford County add 12 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and reach an even 2,300 cases throughout the pandemic. Missaukee County added two and reached 1,131; Lake County added five and reached 507 and Osceola County added four cases and reached 1,444 total.

CADILLAC â If you ve been exposed to COVID-19, you need to quarantine for 14 days post-exposure.
That s longer than the quarantine guideline for much of the pandemic, which called for a 10-day quarantine. But that guidelines have changed as the third surge of the pandemic got underway in Michigan, as the B.1.1.7 variant, which is more contagious, spreads in the state.
But getting the message out into the world about the longer quarantine encountered a snag in the District Health Department No. 10 region, among others.
The health department said over the weekend that Traceforce, the contact tracing platform used by many health departments, including DHD No. 10, had not updated its system to the new 14-day quarantine until April 15.
CADILLAC â As COVID-19 surges persist, deaths tend to follow.
That s continuing to happen in local counties, with both Missaukee and Lake counties adding one death each since Friday.
District Health Department No. 10 s data dashboard on Monday showed Missaukee County had lost a 14th person to COVID-19 and Lake County had lost their 12th person to the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
As the Cadillac News reported on Friday, April 16, most of the area s COVID-19 deaths have happened since November, when the second surge began.
In addition to the new deaths, each of the counties in the newspaper s coverage area have recorded new COVID-19 cases since Friday.

It costs money to print newspapers, and, like any business, we care about our bottom lines, so we can invest in our people and the technology, equipment, and services necessary to improve what we have to offer.
But, at their heart, newspapers exist for public service.
A call to public service dragged most of us into this sometimes rotten enterprise. Knowing we’ve made our communities better places in ways big and small makes all the late nights, early mornings, missed special occasions, extra five (or 10 or 20) pounds, coffee addiction, and headache worth it.
That’s why it meant so much to learn this week that the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors had given The News first place in public service for our coronavirus coverage.
