The mahi begins for Hastings District Council as it unanimously decided to consult members of the public on whether to introduce Māori wards in the 2022 elections. On Wednesday afternoon, the council’s Heretaunga Takoto Noa Māori standing committee recommended introducing Māori wards, triggering an emergency council meeting on Thursday about how it should go about its public consultation process. “Everyone needed to hear from the committee and as the chairman Mike Paku mentioned, 181 years later, Māori are still sitting at the table asking for fair representation and other speakers also outlined the value and importance of partnerships,” Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said.
