10 New Books We Recommend This Week
March 4, 2021
We recommend six novels this week, among them a romantic comedy about frozen yogurt, a look at life in the Airbnb age, and the sequel to Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning “The Sympathizer.” In nonfiction, we like four books that touch on various aspects of race in America, including a memoir by a Black woman who was raised by white parents, an analysis of the harm that racism inflicts on society at large, and two biographies: one about the notorious white supremacist John C. Calhoun, who served as a senator and vice president in the 19th century, and the other a group biography about the mothers of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and James Baldwin.

Ray Wood, has publicly stated the letter her father allegedly wrote before his death is fake. Circulating throughout the past week, the letter claims that the New York Police Department intentionally played a role in the death of civil rights leader
Malcolm X. The letter entered headlines after it was read aloud by her cousin, Reggie Wood, and shared with the family of Malcolm X.
“I know that my father did not write this letter,” Kelly Wood told reporters.
“I know that is not his signature and I know the envelope they re using to somehow justify that the letter was mailed is also a fake.

BRIDGEPORT Philanthropist Joseph Kaliko lives about 30 miles southwest in Greenwich, which, given that town’s wealth, might as well be a world away.
Those disparities between Kaliko’s home and Bridgeport lead to a street in the city’s downtown being named in his honor last fall. For several years Kaliko raised money or contributed his own funds to different causes here.

The most important thing to director Regina King for her directorial debut on “One Night in Miami” was to have everything as historically accurate as possible.
Cinematographer Tami Reiker’s research bible was “Goat: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali” by Jeff Koons. Reiker whose credits include “The Old Guard” and “Beyond the Lights,” says this tome of Ali inspired her from the positioning of the cameras to selecting the lights she used to illuminate this historical recreation.

As the title indicates, the film takes place one night in Miami and centers around several discussions between the real life figures and friends Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). It’s a what-if situation based on a real-life meeting. Nut none one knows wha
