Annie Dyson scored four goals to help Virginia to a 19-13 victory over Connecticut in the opening round of the NCAA women s lacrosse tournament.
Connecticut was somewhat surprised to find out that it had earned an at-large bid to the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament after losing in the Big East championship game last weekend. For most of the evening against Virginia, the Huskies proved that it very much belonged. UConn trailed just 11-10 into the second half, but the Cavaliers ultimately pulled away for a 19-13 victory.
UConn had leads of 3-2 and 4-3 in the first half and got back within 11-10 on Stephanie Palmucci’s goal with 24:20 left in the game, but then the Cavaliers turned it on. Seven different Virginia players scored goals during a seven-goal run, including this highlight-reel goal from Morgan Schwab.
Playoff time is upon us and the first round of games today, surprisingly, led to no
real surprises. The games that you would have expected to be tight ones, were tight, and the games that you would expect to be out of reach were as well. So far, the selection committee seems to have been pretty spot on with where they’ve placed everyone.
But if I had to guess, the lack of “upsets” will not last… as I’m sure that there will be at least one or two games that we all won’t expect the results of.

We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness.
Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend.
