THE CITY-In LA county approximately 15 percent of the nearly 11 million residents live in poverty, but COVID has caused that number to rise.   In the developing nation of India where Eric Garcetti has been short-listed for an ambassadorship, hundreds of millions of people among the 1.4 billion Indians are living in poverty.   Though there were only 580,466 people who experienced homelessness on a single night in the United States in 2020 according to HUD, approximately 75,000 of that group are here in LA County. India may have 1.8 million unhoused people.  Speaking plainly, it is hard to see the job in India as a plum assignment when 4,194 Indians died of COVID on May 21, 2021 alone.

For what seems like forever, those groups have clashed. Homeless individuals have assaulted housed Malibuites; homeless individuals have died in Malibu, many hit by vehicles on PCH. Last November, fires lit by people experiencing homelessness and trying to keep warm caused multiple close calls in Tuna Canyon, causing major safety concerns both for those living in tents there and those living in homes nearby. In the same fire season, in February, a person experiencing homelessness spotted an electrical fire flare up near Malibu Knolls in the darkness and biked to Fire Station 88 to alert firefighters to the blaze.

Genevieve Finn, Malibu Times / SMDP Staff Writer Malibu City Manager Reva Feldman officially resigned from her post on Saturday, May 1 in a deal that will avoid the threat of a lawsuit. Malibu City Attorney John Cotti said the city would launch a national search for Feldman’s replacement “very soon” and that Steve McClary, a former city manager in Ojai, has been named as Interim City Manager. The terms of Feldman’s resignation were unanimously approved, 5-0, by Malibu city council. She received a payment of $150,000 on May 1, with the possibility of another on August 1, 2021, if she has not found a new job by then. Cotti said that the city’s insurer would contribute $150,000 of the total settlement amount.
