FGCU students experimenting with hydrogen peroxide to kill blue-green algae

FGCU students experimenting with hydrogen peroxide to kill blue-green algae Published: May 12, 2021 5:10 PM EDT Updated: May 12, 2021 5:11 PM EDT Recommended Students at Florida Gulf Coast University are seeing if hydrogen peroxide can be used to kill or potentially stop toxic algae. The students are using the algae outbreak on Lake Okeechobee to learn how to potentially control it in water conditions from the Caloosahatchee River. It’s a chance to bring the lab outside in a more real-life scenario. “Today is the second day of our cyanobacteria experiment that we are running in these tubs over here,” said Taylor Hancock, a research assistant at the Water School at FGCU and a PhD student at the University of South Florida.

During his press conference, DeSantis claimed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is not managing Lake Okeechobee very well right now. DeSantis said, “The way this lake is managed is causing problems, it caused a lot of problems in Southwest Florida in 2018 and it’s caused problems on the East Coast as well in the past.” He said the lake needs to be managed better during the dry season to prepare for the rainy season by releasing water in the winter months.

Water experts monitor blue-green algae in Lake Okeechobee

Monday, Calusa Waterkeeper posted images of what appears to be blue-green algae that could be seen in streaks over Lake Okeechobee. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses satellite images of Lake Okeechobee to show how blue-green algae conditions change on the lake. Florida lawmakers want to ban offshore drilling to protect our coastline

Florida lawmakers want to ban offshore drilling to protect our coastline Published: May 3, 2021 3:59 PM EDT Updated: May 6, 2021 10:38 AM EDT Recommended We hope to never see an oil spill like the Deepwater Horizon spill of 2010. Florida is surrounded by more than 1,000 miles of coastline. Representative Vern Buchanan represents Florida’s 16th Congressional District. “Well, I can’t imagine anything more important than our water quality,” Buchanan said.

Tool helps prepare for sea level rise, coastal flooding in Collier County

Tool helps prepare for sea level rise, coastal flooding in Collier County Published: April 28, 2021 5:30 PM EDT Recommended We may not have a crystal ball to predict the future, but researchers hope a new tool will give us a better idea of how one of our most populated counties will fare in the face of storms and sea level rise. There’s nothing quite like sitting alongside the beautiful Gulf on a sunny day in Collier County, but we don’t want that water moving further inland. It’s a real concern for Hyla Crane, executive director of the Marco Island Center for the Arts.
