You’d think a game featuring mysterious green magic swirling in the London underground would be all about weird stuff. But Last Stop at least from what I’ve seen of it so far is first and foremost a game about people. Last Stop is the latest from Variable State, the U.K. indie studio behind 2016’s oddball mystery

Last Stop Is A Truly Cinematic Experience That Uses its Camera In Clever Ways

Last Stop Is A Truly Cinematic Experience That Uses its Camera In Clever Ways Developer Variable State has pulled a 180 with Last Stop, which is structured very differently to the studio s debut game, Virginia. GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers. I m a little surprised by just how cinematic Last Stop is. Developer Variable State wrestles the camera away from the player to frame every scene in different ways. Much like Silent Hill or The Medium, this is sometimes utilized to achieve a disturbing voyeuristic effect, but as Last Stop is a supernatural adventure game and not horror, the camera is used to convey more feelings beyond fear or dread.

Last Stop might be the most London game I ve ever played

Getting through hard Thames.  22 April 2021 What s Last Stop about? After playing the first few chapters, I m still not entirely sure - but that s probably the point. An adventure game in which the plot slowly unfolds through three interconnected stories, it s initially a slow burner, yet the characters and cliffhangers introduced with each chapter have me completely intrigued - and I m itching to know how each of them gets resolved. Made by Variable State and published by Annapurna Interactive, Last Stop is a single-player adventure game releasing on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch this July. It takes place in current-day London, and follows the lives of several average citizens as they go about their everyday lives. Or at least they start that way: things very quickly get spooky as the characters experience supernatural encounters.

Last Stop hands-on preview: Story train

I m a big fan of narrative-based adventure games, especially when there s a twist to the concept. The team at Variable State has brought together some interesting new characters, but more interesting is the way the game is presented. We took an early look at one of the many games coming this year from publisher Annapurna Interactive. Last Stop starts off like something out of Black Mirror or The Twilight Zone. A pair of unknown figures are looking to escape police on foot by cutting across a subway station. A mysterious stranger waits nearby and urges them to run through the door next to him. One does, but the other doesn t, and when the door is eventually pulled back a second time, there s only a brick wall. This is the Twilight Zone/Black Mirror type of setup for Last Stop s story and it s just the beginning of what players will experience.
