Some parents in the South Orange-Maplewood school district will be bringing their children to school on Friday morning, even though all classrooms remain closed.
An outdoor sit-in is being planned for the lawn by the Marshall Elementary School in South Orange, as district administrators and the teachers’ union continue to haggle over the K-12 district’s long-stalled reopening plan.

Kids chased each other across the lawn of Marshall Elementary School in South Orange, as others sat in picnic chairs and blankets, completing schoolwork on a balmy March morning.
“This is as close to school as our kids can get right now,” Kate Walker, a parent and co-leader of the community group SOMA for Safe Return to School, told NJ Advance Media.
Kept out of school since the pandemic began last March, students in the South Orange-Maplewood community have found themselves caught in the middle of a bitter and entrenched battle between the local school district and teachers’ union.

BYRON CENTER, Mich. â Less than a month after being diagnosed with a rare bone cancer, the West Michigan community is putting their support behind a beloved Byron Center teacher.
âItâs going to be a long process,â said Sierra Zylstra. âIt certainly was a shock to my family and I.â
Earlier this month, doctors diagnosed Zylstra with osteosarcoma after she dealt with knee pain for about a year. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,000 cases of osteosarcoma are diagnosed in the United States each year. It often forms in the legs and can metastasize. Zylstraâs has spread to her lungs.

The morning of Jan. 19 was supposed to be a celebration.
Yellow school buses once again chugged down leafy Maplewood streets. Eager kids hugged their parents goodbye outside their South Orange homes. Morning school bells rang, signaling more than just the start of a new day.

Ten-year-old Peter Kaplan took the microphone and fired up the crowd of more than 100 fellow students and their parents from the South Orange-Maplewood School District.
“We’ve got to keep on going, because if we don’t now we’re going to lose,” said Peter, a 5th grader at Seth Boyden Elementary School in Maplewood, addressing the crowd from the steps of the town’s municipal building at dinnertime on Monday. “And we can’t accept the defeat from the district, who are just bullying us the whole way, and that’s just not right.”
