Like most Army ROTC programs, the University of Maine conducts an annual staff ride for their senior class. This event offers a unique opportunity for historical research for the cadets and gives them a chance to take a deep dive into a historical campaign or subject. In the past, this likely meant spending a lot of time with dusty books, but not in 2021.

Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe’s name now graces the primary ceremonial grounds at Fort Stewart, Ga., which were renamed Thursday in honor of the fallen Iraq War hero by 3rd Infantry Division officials as they await word on a proposal to award the Medal of Honor to the soldier.

Antonio Aguto, the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, secures a wreath at the Wreaths for Warriors Walk on Fort Stewart, Georgia, Dec. 19, 2020, for the tree dedicated to Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, while the fallen Soldier’s sisters, Bernadine (left), and Kasinal Cashe observe. Cashe retrieved seven Soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter from a burning Bradley Fighting Vehicle in Oct. 2005. Cashe posthumously received the Silver Star Medal for his actions that ultimately took his life and is being considered to receive the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military’s highest award for gallantry and bravery. A member of Cashe’s family has participated in the Wreaths for Warriors Walk every year since its inception in 2007.
