Rebuilding Bend s Les Schwab Amphitheater

Bend s biggest stage is getting a new look If you ve been on Shevlin-Hixon Drive in Bend recently, you might have noticed something strange as you drove, ran, walked or biked by namely, that the Les Schwab Amphitheater is completely unrecognizable. Before, depending on which way you were coming from, your eye would be drawn toward the murals on the back or front sides of the stage. Now, instead, you immediately notice giant steel beams stretching toward the sky. Bend Concerts announced at the end of 2020 that the amphitheater would enter into a four-phase remodeling plan. Phase I is chugging right along and is expected to finish in June, while Phase II will begin this fall. Other phases will follow in the years to come.

The Year the Music Died

The music industry took a big hit in 2020. Will it roar back in 2021? It took a decade, dozens of artists, and hundreds of volunteers to transform the Four Peaks music festival from a bootstrap local gathering into a bona fide concert destination. But it took just one rogue virus a few weeks to bring it all crashing down in late March. That s when Stacy Koff, festival founder and organizer, made the decision to cancel plans for the 2020 edition, a festival that was set to be bigger and more ambitious than any previous iteration. Gary Calicott Revelers cut the proverbial rug at Bend s Four Peaks music festival, which drew more than 2,000 fans in 2019. The festival was canceled in June and organizers expect a smaller gathering in 2021, if at all.

(Re-)setting the stage: Major upgrades begin at Bend s Les Schwab Amphitheater

Submitted photo (Update: More on area of synthetic lawn; much of space remains real grass) Multi-phase project begins on the eve of venue s 20th birthday BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) After a downbeat, way-too-quiet concert season like no other and never again, many hope work begins this week on a $4 million-plus, multi-phase upgrade of Bend’s popular Les Schwab Amphitheater. The goals of the renovation, according to Monday s announcement, are to enhance accessibility for all guests, attract more talent and performers, and continue to provide economic benefits for the Central Oregon region. The first phase of construction began Monday and is expected to be finished by next June, in time to make way for a typically robust (and 20th anniversary) concert season, if the efforts to curb COVID-19 and resume such fun activities go as planned.
