The European Union Provides an Additional USD Eight Million for UNMAS Activities in Iraq [EN/AR] Format Baghdad, 30 July 2021 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Iraq welcomes an additional contribution of EUR 7,000,000 (approximately USD 8,059,000) from the European Union (EU), which will support the Government of Iraq in protecting vulnerable civilians from the threat posed by explosive ordnance left behind by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Implementation of the project has already commenced, and is scheduled to last until mid-2022. As part of the project initiation, UNMAS recently hosted a project launch meeting and the first steering committee meeting chaired by the Directorate of Mine Action (DMA) and the EU. The annual work plan was discussed, along with challenges, opportunities and the sustainability of the project activities.

Iraqi rights activist s son found shot dead

Daily Times July 26, 2021 The son of a prominent Iraqi rights activist was found shot dead in the country’s south after he went missing a day earlier, a medical source and activists said Sunday. The body of 26-year-old Ali Karim, who was “kidnapped” by unidentified assailants on Friday, was found 24 hours later west of the city of Basra, according to relatives speaking to Iraqi media before his funeral. A medical source told AFP Karim had been shot in the head and chest. His mother, Fatima al-Bahadly, founded the Al-Firdaws Society, which focuses on the protection and education of women and campaigns against the recruitment of young people into armed groups. She has been the target of public accusations from some political parties claiming she is bound to “external connections”, said Ali al-Bayati, a member of the Iraqi government’s human rights commission, who said Karim had been abducted and shot dead.

Iraq makes strides to develop poultry and tomato sector strategies Sector-focused consultations to support sustainable and inclusive development in the poultry and tomato value chains in Iraq were held in Basra and Mosul on 4 July 2021. These consultations will be instrumental in elaborating national strategies for the two sectors. The poultry and tomato sector strategies will serve as a compass for the Government, private sector and development partners to improve the competitiveness of farmers and small and medium enterprises in these two sectors, contributing to the national pathway towards sustainable food systems, inclusive growth and job creation for Iraq citizens. Aligned with national planning frameworks, the strategies will specify clear priorities eventually producing a concrete five-year plan of action (2022-2026) that will not only define roles for implementing institutions but also provide an implementation management framework.
