Longtime Rochester, Minn., farmer gets a new view on planting

ROCHESTER, Minn. ― The eye that Tom Pyfferoen has on his crops is different this planting season.
Literally, he s seeing through a new lens.
Pyfferoen underwent cataract surgery one week before he got into the fields to start planting this spring. So we re just just kind of getting rolling with it, he said. It s been a challenge, actually.
Dag Knudsen, who has a farm near Lake City, Minn., worked with wastewater treatment plants in Israel, Hong Kong, Australia, and other locations during his career. He is concerned that the waste produced by concentrated animal feeding operations CAFOs is excessive and is causing problems.
âIn Iowa, they have about 3 million people,â Knudsen said. âThey have a lot of concentrated feeding operations there, and the waste produced by their hog industry is 30 times the amount of waste produced by their people.â
He noted that human waste must always go to a wastewater treatment plant, but animal waste is allowed to be stored in lagoons.

The Nightmare of Being for release on July 2nd via Century Media Records. Today (April 30th), the group unveiled the record s first single Spectre of Extinction.
The album opener sets the stage for the
The Nightmare of Being s more experimental direction, which finds the band vocalist Tomas Lindberg Redant, guitarists Martin Larsson and Jonas Stålhammar, bassist Jonas Björler and drummer Adrian Erlandsson adding progressive elements to their signature melodeath sound. Spectre of Extinction kicks off with a nylon string guitar, before unfolding into a rousing, full-throttle riff assault led by Linberg Redant s vicious vocals. This burner also features a choice guest solo spot by ATG producer/King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque.
