OPINION: Why Waitangi 2021 became so politically important for Maori

Australian PM Calls On New Zealand To Align More Against China

Sunday, 7 February 2021, 4:52 pm On Sky News on February 1, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called on New Zealand’s Labour Party-led government to “stick together” with the US-led Five Eyes intelligence network, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Britain and Canada, against China. Interviewer Paul Murray asked whether Morrison was concerned that New Zealand was “changing its priorities a little bit, or [is] China helping them change their priorities?… How important is it that New Zealand is all in on Five Eyes [and] not trying to keep an eye somewhere else as well?” Morrison replied: “The Five Eyes is really important, and so are liberal market

He added: “We’ve got to continue to maintain our vigilance over this, and to do that we’ve got to stick together.”

OPINION: Thankfully Labour isn t just offering a holiday in two years to Māori this Waitangi Day

Related Podcast Martyn Bomber Bradbury: This is Jacinda s fourth Waitangi Day as Prime Minister and thankfully she wasn t just offering the public holiday of Matariki in two years on the Treaty grounds, in fact, it was what wasn t spoken this year that offers Māoridom the most hope. The decision by the Government to simply overrule the deeply problematic petition threshold provision for Māori Wards on Local Councils was proof positive that Jacinda is walking the talk when it comes to Māori aspiration. The usual Right Wing voices have been apoplectic in predicting the end of Western civilization as we know it if Local Councils are allowed to flex their conscience and install Māori wards to allow for representation. They claim these divisive and effectively racist petitions are desperately needed to prevent Maori privilege .

OPINION: Why Hone s Road Blocks are righteous and should be supported

One of the things I as a Pākeāa have learned to understand about a Māori worldview is that the past is present in every step of today to guide tomorrow. In a shallow 24-hour hyper consumer culture constantly binging on the ever sold current moment, it s sometimes tough for Pakeha culture to appreciate Māori cultures wider view. For many Māori, the grievance of yesterday has never faded and the memory of forebearers is constantly with them. Māori remembers the mass graves caused by the 1918 Influenza pandemic. They remember 2500 Māori dying from the pandemic.
