New Zealand has played their own local Super Rugby Aotearoa event for the past two years and from next year look set to join Australia s five franchises and two from the Pacific islands in a new 12-team Super Rugby event.
The old Super Rugby format - which featured 16 teams, including the Jaguares from Argentina and Sunwolves from Japan - was dissolved last year during the Covid-19 pandemic.
South Africa s four teams - the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers - have since joined the PRO14 in Europe.

In his address to Monday night s Derry AGM, Stephen Barker paid tribute to the late Hugh McWilliams, who he described as a giant of generosity .
Hugh was Managing Directory of local firm H&A Mechanical, who are confirmed as the county s main sponsor for 2021, their sixth in all, with a new-look jersey due for release early next year.
“He was unstinting in his support for county, club and community,” Barker added.
A very efficient meeting, lasting 63 minutes in total, had 34 clubs logged in via Video Conferencing platform Microsoft Teams.
Derry GAA held their annual convention on Monday evening with county chairman Stephen Barker paying tribute to the work done by clubs and the association during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The convention was held online with the socially distanced County Board members in Owenbeg joined, via Microsoft teams by club delegates from across Derry. 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, not just sport, and everyone in society is indebted to the crucial work of the NHS and carers who have been heroes throughout this pandemic., Mr Barker said. The GAA too has played it part, both nationally and locally with clubs provided a vital source of contact for rural communities and those isolated because of lockdown.
