I would like to thank those who voted for me and those who supported me in last week’s election. Campaigning this year was not straightforward and much of our work was done through press releases and social media.
I would also like to thank the Shetland Islands Council staff for the efficient and well-run counting procedures, both for postal votes and on the day.
As you may know, I was not able to come to Shetland personally for the campaign but will do so when I can.
The Labour Party will continue to focus on a national recovery post-Covid and concentrate on getting the country back on a steadier economic path, with a robust National Health Service and education service in place.

he MSYPs said they did not speak to independent candidate Peter Tait as his policy around same-sex marriage goes against what the rights-based Scottish Youth Parliament works towards.
LABOUR candidate for the Shetland seat Martin Kerr has again emphasised that only a vote for him and his party would secure a fair recovery for all from the Covid-19 pandemic.
âThe recovery from Covid should be the only priority. Peopleâs jobs, their health and our kidsâ education. Use your peach ballot paper to vote for the Labour Party on the list vote to secure a fair recovery for all,â he said.
SNP candidate Tom Willsâ election campaign has received a late boost in the form of an endorsement from former independent candidate Ryan Thomson.
Thomson, who is chairman of Shetland Islands Councilâs environment and transport committee, won 1,286 votes in the August 2019 by-election.
That equated to a share of nearly 11 per cent in a contest won by a margin of just over 15 per cent by Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart, with the destiny of those votes likely to be a significant factor in determining the outcome this time around.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Thomson said he would be voting this Thursday âin a different way to what I have beforeâ.
