After 25 years Mogwai have a number one album – and it only took a pandemic to get there How the Scottish underdogs emotion-filled instrumentals have gone from being the anti-Britpop to the chart-toppers no one expected Mogwai beat grime MC Ghetts to the number one album Credit: OCC Twelve months into Covid, the world has transformed in many radical ways. Face-masks are de rigueur. Disney is releasing blockbusters straight to the small screen. “Take-away” pints are a thing. Unbelievably happy : Scots band land their first UK number one album after 25 years MOGWAI have landed their first number one album - 25 years on from the release of their debut single. The Scottish band s tenth studio album The Love Continues debute at No.1 on the UK Official Albums Chart. The Scottish rock group have been facing off with British grime MC, rapper and songwriter Ghetts for this week’s top spot, with the UK rapper taking to the streets of central London in an armoured tank hoping to blast his third album Conflict Of Interest to the summit.   Mogwai finished the week 2,900 chart sales ahead of Ghetts, resulting in landmark moment for the band.

With touring on hold, Scotland’s sons of guitar anarchy and DIY synth splendour released two pay-what-you-will digital albums in the last year, a live belter (2018) and a lush score (ZeroZeroZero). And although the 25th anniversary of their debut single could have been their cue to take stock, Mogwai have resurfaced with their most evolved album in a decade, tethering their formative instincts to forward-thinking ambitions with an instinctive feel for our choppy times.
