The shooting of a man in Londonderry by police is yet further proof the widespread rollout of Tasers to PSNI officers is needed, the Police Federation has said.
A Police Ombudsman investigation is ongoing into events at Celandine Court in Gobnascale on Saturday evening.
One officer sustained stab wounds and police discharged CS spray and a single gunshot , the Police Ombudsman said.
A man in his 40s was taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition.
In a statement, the PSNI said: As officers were dealing with the incident, a police firearm was discharged and the man sustained a chest injury. A police officer sustained a knife wound to his arm and head during the incident and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

A MAN was last night shot in the chest by a member of the PSNI in Co Derry.
Police last night responded to reports of concern over the safety of a man at a flat at Celendaine Court, Gobnascale in the Waterside area.

While dealing with the incident a police firearm was discharged at around 10.45pm.
The man was rushed to hospital with a chest injury and is believed to be in a critical condtion.
During the altercation, a police officer suffered stab wounds to his arm and head and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A man has been shot in Derry during an incident involving police.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said it was responding to âa report of concern for safetyâ for a man at an address in Celandine Court in the Gobnascale area of the Waterside at around 10.45pm on Saturday.
âAs officers were dealing with the incident, a police firearm was discharged and the male sustained a chest injury,â a police spokeswoman said. âHe remains in hospital at this time.â
A police officer also sustained a knife wound to his arm and head during the incident and has also been taken to hospital for treatment.
