I am writing to urge you to support L.D. 759 (the Safe Storage Bill). I taught in the Richmond school system for 30 years, and was both terrified and saddened to read about last month’s gun incident at the Marcia Buker Elementary School (“Richmond police respond to elementary school for student who brought loaded gun to school,” April 6).
I was terrified because someone could have been killed, and saddened to think about all the children, parents, and educators that were confronted with this very real, very threatening experience. I doubt any will forget it.

Maine s child-endangerment law is all but silent on keeping firearms away from children. That needs to change.

Nothing shines a spotlight on Maine’s child-endangerment law like a 2-year-old boy who shoots both of his sleeping parents with a loaded weapon.
It happened in West Bath on the morning of May 12.
According to police, the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun was sitting on a night table when the toddler picked it up and pulled the trigger. The single shot hit the boy’s mother in the leg, and two bullet fragments hit the father in the back of the head. The little boy was injured as well when the gun recoiled and struck him in the face.

The 11-year-old did just that Tuesday morning after his friend showed him a loaded gun. The student had brought the weapon to Marcia Buker Elementary School and kept it in a backpack.
The fifth-grader said he was “nervous” about the situation, but immediately knew what to do.
