Longtime SUNY Potsdam music professor, Crane Symphony Orchestra conductor passes away

Tuesday, May 25, 2021 - 9:12 am POTSDAM Longtime music professor and Crane Symphony Orchestra conductor Richard Albert Stephan passed away on May 15, 2021. Stephan, who was born on March 30, 1929, was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus upon his retirement from the Crane School of Music (SUNY Potsdam) in 2000 after 32 years of teaching. He was conductor of the Crane Symphony Orchestra and taught string bass, jazz guitar, and string education. Stephan graduated from Fredonia State University with a Bachelor s in Music Education, Eastman School of Music with a Master s of Music, and Doctoral Studies in Music Education at University of Buffalo and Brigham Young University.

May 12, 2021 CANFIELD Mary Saroukos Kissos, 91, was called home by the Lord on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Constantine Spiro and Ann Stipetic Saroukos. She received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Youngstown State University in 1958. She worked for more than 40 years for the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office. Mary was an office manager for Stassen for President in Youngstown in 1952. She was a member of many organizations, including Philoptochos at St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, and she was their first female president of its board. She also was a member of the Daughters of Penelope, Angels of Easterseals, and was a noteworthy county official by Marquis Who’s Who.
