Lowell s Immigrant Communities
830 Words4 Pages
The Lowellian tradition of immigrant communities was originated in the early 20th century when mill owners failed to provide proper accommodations for the large population of Irish workers who were employed in their factories. This led to Irish immigrants choosing to reside in their own communities within the city. Workers of various nationalities and ethnic groups, including Poles, Portuguese, French-Canadians, and Russian Jews, formed miniature versions of their home countries in Lowell neighborhoods. Lowellâs status as an ethnic melting pot gave it a somewhat cosmopolitan feel; its diversity effectively made it a microcosm of the United States during this era.
