Even without today’s well-timed announcement that Pete Davidson would be playing Joey Ramone in an upcoming biopic, the 20th anniversary of his death would not have gone unnoted. April 15 stands out as Tax Day to many (even though in 2021, that doomy occasion won’t occur until May), but for some, it looms even larger as as the day the punk-rock flag flies at half-mast. The leather jacket-donning Ramone, with his humorously bleak lyrical outlook, exaggerated mop-top, lean frame and gnarly vocals remains undiminished as an icon by the passing years now, as then, the very definition of a punk rock godfather.

Davidson may be three inches shorter than the 6-foot-6 Ramones lead singer, but he has a similar body frame, and side-by-side photos provided by Netflix do make the case that he’ll be able to pull off the role once he’s given a wig and his tattoos (which he’s in the process of removing) are covered by makeup.

Hey, ho! Let’s go!’ The simple rallying crying that kicks off Blitzkrieg Bop, the opening track on The Ramones’ self-titled debut – a record that revolutionised American rock’n’roll in the space of 14 short, sharp tracks.
Released on April 23, 1976, the album’s longest tune – the psychological creep-fest of I Don’t Wanna Go Down To The Basement – clocks in at two minutes and 39 seconds. The shortest – Judy Is A Punk, an ode to young offenders – blasts forth for a mere minute and 32 seconds. The self-explanatory Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue (all one minute 35 seconds of it) is atypical in that it contains a rare guitar solo. This is music with no fat on the bone.
