Grade 12 exam marking extended as marker dies, some withdraw due to Covid-19

Image: 123RF/Julija Sapic The department of basic education has extended the marking of grade 12 exam papers due to a shortage of markers after some withdrew or declined to work,  often because of Covid-19. This was revealed by an education official during a media briefing on Monday. It was also revealed that marking would go on for 18 days, as opposed to 12 to 14 days in previous years. Marking started on January 4 and was expected to be completed on January 22.   “To date 2,703 of 46,024 markers withdrew,” said Priscilla Ogunbanjo, director for examinations at the department.   She said one marker in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, reported for duty at a marking centre while feeling sick and later died of Covid-19 complications. Another marker has since contracted the coronavirus at the centre.

This is the second marker who has died while on marking duty in less than a week. On Tuesday a 59-year-old woman based at the same marking centre had been marking the isiXhosa papers when she was found unconscious at the marking centre s accommodation site. The marker, who tested positive for Covid-19, was admitted to hospital but died on Thursday.

The education department was offering counselling to other markers who may be affected by the incident. Her family is also being assisted. “Accordingly, the group of markers who were in contact with the now-deceased marker were tested on Tuesday and released from the marking venue while waiting for results. The marking centre was immediately defogged and sanitised,” the department said. This incident comes as some teacher unions expressed concern about the safety of markers. In KwaZulu-Natal, at least two markers have died, also apparently from Covid-19, since the start of the marking period on January 4. The Gauteng education department said it has implemented strict Covid-19 protocols, which include reducing the numbers of markers per class and employing assistants at all the centres to ensure that the markers adhere to the regulations.
