MONTREAL - General manager Marc Bergevin is defending the Montreal Canadiens controversial selection in Friday s NHL entry draft.
The Habs took Logan Mailloux with the No. 31 pick just days after the defenceman posted a statement on Twitter asking teams not to choose him in this year s draft.
Mailloux s statement followed news that he had been charged and paid a fine in Sweden for distributing a sexual photo without consent.
The Montreal Canadiens’ selection of Logan Mailloux is indefensible
Appalling doesn’t even begin to cover the Canadiens’ decision on Friday night.

: This article discusses sex crimes committed by the 2021 first-round NHL Draft pick Logan Mailloux.
The Montreal Canadiens became a Cinderella story of sorts with an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final just a few weeks ago. They did it on the last remaining bits of Shea Weber, and the willpower of Carey Price.
And they just threw all of that goodwill out the window with one selection in the NHL Draft.
Logan Mailloux is an absolutely indefensible pick for the Canadiens, least of all because there were higher-ranked players, or others that fit areas of need. It’s indefensible because Mailloux does not deserve the right to put on the Montreal sweater and get that honour.

Canadiens take player 31st who asked not to be drafted
SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) The Montreal Canadiens stunned the rest of the NHL on Friday night by taking Logan Mailloux with the second-to-last pick in the first round of the draft.
Mailloux, who was criminally convicted in Sweden last year for sharing an explicit photo of a woman performing a sex act without her consent, asked teams not to select him. A player cannot remove himself from the draft.
Mailloux said in a social media statement this week, “I don’t feel I have demonstrated strong enough maturity or character” to be drafted this year. Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said the 18-year-old Mailloux was eligible to be taken and defended the selection afterward.
