SANTA MONICA, CA It s time to grieve, artist Marcos Lutyens explains.
It started with just a few handmade, red felt roses, but the Rose River Memorial has now grown to signify the thousands who have died in the coronavirus pandemic.
Each rose represents a life, a loved one lost to coronavirus on Los Angeles Westside. Each rose symbolizes a memory and tribute behind a heartbreaking loss.

Lutyens created the memorial, which is now featured at Building Bridges Art Exchange, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica. The memorial is growing. As the pandemic claims more victims, Lutyens is planning for at least half a million roses in the next few months across the country. This pandemic, this virus, it s like an invisible entity. The idea of making these roses is each one is something you can touch and hold and feel and generate but also when you see all the roses together, you begin to realize the full scale of this thing, Lutyens said.
