Zach Parise was surprised.
When Wild General Manager Bill Guerin contacted Parise on Tuesday morning, Parise s mind went to the approaching deadline for teams to ask players like him to waive no-movement clauses in their contracts before the upcoming expansion draft.
But that wasn t why Guerin was calling.
And once Parise heard the reason, his first reaction was sadness. Unfortunately, it s ending this way, Parise said. It leaves a little bit of a sour taste.
Both players had become faces of the franchise after signing matching 13-year, $98 million contracts in 2012, acquisitions that thrilled owner Craig Leipold and immediately raised the profile of the organization on and off the ice after years of stagnancy. Parise and Suter had four more seasons to go before the partnership was cut short, the message relayed during Guerin s phone call.

Edmonton Oilers: Off-season predictions and plans A Set the default text size A Set large text size A Set the default text size A Set large text size
The Oilers have a huge off-season coming up, with over $22 million in cap space being freed up and players to be signed.
They also have the Seattle expansion draft to look forward to and make moves accordingly at the right time. After their first-round exit and the core of the team still young and in their prime, Ken Holland looks to add the right pieces to help push the Oilers over the edge and compete for a Stanley Cup next year and beyond.
The people responsible understood his frustration as well as anyone.
Wild general manager Bill Guerin and coach Dean Evason, with their combined 31 years in the NHL, fully realized Parise would be upset.
âLook, Dean and I both played. We get it. We both grew old, too,” Guerin said. âThese guys are all human beings. They all have emotions. They all feel.â
The week after the Wild were eliminated from the playoffs by the Vegas Golden Knights in a tight first-round series that went the full seven games, Guerin and the rest of the staff have shifted focus toward a tricky summer.
