Dezeen wins two trophies at British Society of Magazine Editors awards
Dezeen has won two more awards, scooping the specialist editor of the year and independent editor of the year categories at the British Society of Magazine Editors awards.
Dezeen founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs was named specialist editor of the year at the BSME s 2020 awards, which were announced on 11 February 2021 after being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Always at the top of their game, this brand continues to evolve, innovate and find new ways to engage its audience, said the judges.
Fairs also won independent editor of the year, with judges particularly praising Dezeen s Virtual Design Festival.
Mamou-Mani, Inglessis and Pawlyn discussed how technology can enable architects to create buildings that bring their inhabitants closer to nature, as well as how experimental projects can drive change in the wider design industry, and how the new accessibility of powerful design software is impacting architecture and sustainability.
Architect Arthur Mamou-Mani, who is collaborating with Dassault Systèmes, appeared on the panel
French architect Mamou-Mani is the founder of his eponymous London-based architecture practice, known for experiments with alternative materials and methods of construction.
The project explores how architects can use recyclable materials and emergent technologies like 3D-printing to create architectural projects that contribute to a circular economy and minimise their impact on the environment.
Farah Nasri, Irthi Contemporary Craft Council
Moderated by Dezeen s editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs, the panel featured Farah Nasri, the council s assistant manager of curation and design, who will give an insight into the organisation and its aims.
Also appearing was jewellery designer Alia bin Omair, architect Faysal Tabbarah and designer and architect Abdalla Almulla – three of the 12 creatives who worked together with the Bedouin craftswomen for the council s premiere collection.
The three creatives will speak about their work with Irthi Contemporary Craft Council and discuss how the collaboration with the Bedouin artisans changed their view on their own practice.
The panel also addressed the value in pairing local artisans with design practices and discussed how it can create long-term and sustainable economic empowerment for female makers in the UAE.
The live conversation also covered the role of collaboration in the design industry, how to turn discourse into action, and the ways in which sustainability could work as a business strategy. The obstacles for a very traditional, 120-year manufacturer like Johnson Tiles are very different to those of an entrepreneurial business like The Good Plastic Company, said Bridges. As the UK s only surviving large scale tile manufacturer, we ve had to navigate our industrial set-up to move forward sustainably; both to address the environmental crisis and to stay in business, he added.
