Although the surname Joyce may automatically be associated with author James Joyce, the name has an ancient past, with both Irish and Norman antecedents.
Derived from the Brehon personal name Iodoc, which is a diminutive of iudh meaning lord, the name was adopted by the Normans in the form Josse. While some scholars believe that the name developed from the French Joie, which means joy, a multitude of names developed in Ireland and England from Josse, including Joce, Joass, and Joyce.
Despite its international origins Joyce is regarded as a true Irish name and is more common in Ireland than in any other country.

A row broke out over the work of a proposed council human resources committee.
Liberal Democrat John Lewis proposed Bingham Town Council create the committee after recent staffing issues.
He said: âCouncillors who form the committee have to be able to work with the town clerk and deputy clerk to achieve improvements in staff relations.

Daniel, died (suddenly) at University Hospital Limerick.
Beloved son of Inga and Robert and brother of Jack Ammonsen. Sadly missed by his parents, brother, girlfriend, his extended family and friends in particular those in St. Clement s College and the Limerick Institute of Technology
For those who would like to pay their respects, Daniel s Funeral cortege will pass his residence on Friday, February 26 at 12.00pm approx. en route to Shannon Crematorium, to arrive for a private Humanist Service, for family only, at 1pm. The service will be streamed live on Shannon Crematorium.
