DELAYS, COMPETITION THREATEN PAPUA NEW GUINEA GAS PROJECT

DELAYS, COMPETITION THREATEN PAPUA NEW GUINEA GAS PROJECT Submitted by admin on Wed, 08/09/2000 - 00:00 PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (August 7, 2000 - Papua New Guinea Post-Courier/PINA Nius Online) -A failure by the State and the proponents of the K 1 billion (US$ 384,000,000) PNG Gas project to conclude the negotiations on gas agreements quickly could cost the project dearly, sources warned. This, combined with the threat of the Timor pipeline, should be of concern to all parties, the sources said. The Gas Agreement forms the basis for project proponents to make a decision whether to adopt the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase.

FUNDS FOR PNG FERRY INQUIRY TO BE RELEASED SOON | Pacific Islands Report

FUNDS FOR PNG FERRY INQUIRY TO BE RELEASED SOON Submitted by admin on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 00:00 MV Rabaul disaster ‘top priority’ for government PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, March 14, 2012) – The Commission of Inquiry into the last month’s ferry disaster is top priority for government and will be funded before week’s end, the government’s chief secretary Manasupe Zurenuoc said. Zurenuoc said the commission had forwarded certain requests including a budget of K12 million [US$5.7 million] which the government was working on. This is unbudgeted expenditure so the money will have to come from somewhere, he said. There has been some delay because of that. Some other program will have to be sacrificed for it. But the people of Papua New Guinea must know that the government is giving the inquiry top priority and it will proceed.

INTERNATIONAL AID TO PNG RIDES ON 2004 BUDGET | Pacific Islands Report

INTERNATIONAL AID TO PNG RIDES ON 2004 BUDGET Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 11/25/2003 - 00:00 PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Nov. 25) – The mood of Papua New Guinea’s major aid donors will be revealed today when Treasurer Bart Philemon hands down the 2004 budget in Parliament. The cash-strapped National Government has been hoping to attract new money from major donors such as Australia, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. However, aid donors have been reluctant to provide direct budgetary assistance to corruption-tainted PNG instead preferring to support specific development projects. Mr Philemon has already warned citizens the new budget proved a tougher challenge than last year’s because many more foreign debt repayments are becoming due.

PNG FRUIT FLY TRIALS SUCCEEDING | Pacific Islands Report

PNG FRUIT FLY TRIALS SUCCEEDING Submitted by admin on Mon, 06/03/2002 - 00:00 PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (May 31, 2002 - Post-Courier/PINA Nius Online) -There appears to be good news for Papua New Guinea fruit farmers, with trials of a fruit fly control method showing encouraging results. The trials have been conducted for the past three years by the National Agriculture Research Institute. They have been funded by the Australian Center for International Agriculture Research and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. Fruit fly is a major problem in Papua New Guinea, where the insect infects fruits. Infected fruits have little worms inside. Specialists say Papua New Guinea has the highest number of fruit fly species in the Pacific, with about 180 varieties.
