JOHANNESBURG - The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) on Sunday said they wanted government to do more to reduce alcohol-related harm in South Africa.
It welcomed the acknowledgement of alcohol abuse and its impact on communities in the African National Congress’s (ANC) January 8 statement.
The Alliance agreed with President Cyril Ramaphosa that there was a need for a national strategy that included legislative reviews and community mobilisation.

Under adjusted Level 3 restrictions announced on Monday, alcohol sales from retail outlets and onsite consumption are banned.
In his address to the nation on Monday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa cited the consumption of alcohol as one of the drivers for the spike in coronavirus infections in the country. The consumption of alcohol in restaurants, in nightclubs and taverns has contributed to risky behaviour like not wearing masks and not observing social distancing.
He also blamed alcohol consumption for putting additional pressure on health services saying, with every relaxation of the restrictions on the sale of alcohol, the number of trauma cases reporting at our hospitals has increased.

Durban - The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation tonight at 8pm.
Ramaphosa s much-anticipated address comes on the back of intense meetings held yesterday with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and special sessions today of the President’s Coordinating Council (PCC) and Cabinet.
Yesterday, South Africa s Covid-19 caseload surpassed the one million mark.
According to the latest statistics from the National Health Ministry, SA has 1 004 413 Covid-19 cases with 26 521 deaths.
Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, announced that 839 194 people have since recovered from the virus.
