Two assistant police chiefs, a retired assistant chief, a police captain and a Las Vegas narcotics officer are among the finalists to be Maui’s next police chief.
The Maui Police Commission announced the five names at a meeting Wednesday. The commission received 17 applications before a July 12 deadline. Nine came from the mainland; six from Maui County; and two from the neighbor islands.
“I’d like to thank all who applied for the position,” Chairman Frank De Rego said.

Gov. David Ige on Wednesday announced that he has nominated Doreen Canto of Kula to fill the Maui seat on the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
She will replace James “Jimmy” Gomes whose second, four-year-term on the board expired at the end of last month.

According to a press release from the administration, Canto is a Native Hawaiian who previously served as Maui Commissioner for the state Department of Hawaiian Homelands and as chair of the Maui Police Commission.
