The fire was reported at 3 p.m. along Kahekili Highway between Waiehu Beach Road and Makaala Drive, according to the Maui Fire Department. Crews were working to contain the fire in heavy brush on the mauka side of the highway, using dozers to cut a break around the perimeter. It was 50 percent contained as of 7:45 p.m. Second photo: Smoke rises from a brush fire burning in the Waiehu area. The Fire Department said conditions were gusty, with winds of about 20 mph. No structures were threatened. The cause was unknown. Third photo: The Fire Department’s Air One and Air Two helicopters responded to the blaze along with two engines, a hazmat crew, rescue crew, two tankers, a battalion chief, a Maui County tanker and two private dozers.

County requests immediate water conservation measures By Staff | Dec 27, 2020 WAILUKU The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is asking customers in West Maui and Upcountry to conserve water use for the next 24 to 48 hours because of power outages and the ongoing Olowalu brush fire. Due to power outages and the fire, the Lahaina Water Treatment Plant has been closed, the department reported Saturday night. The department asks West Maui and Upcountry residents to limit water consumption to necessary uses only, such as food preparation and bathing. The department apologizes for any inconvenience. Maui police reopened Honoapiilani Highway to contraflow traffic after 12:15 a.m. today, after a fast-moving brush fire closed the highway for several hours on Saturday night.
