Kapalua Homeowners Food Box Distribution
This past fall, homeowners in Kapalua’s residential community gave back by raising over $100,000 in donations to create food boxes for more than 1,000 families in need. Each box contained numerous non-perishable items, a bag of locally-grown fresh produce, five pounds of beef and a $25 gift certificate for Island Grocery. Of the 100K donated, 20K was given to the Maui Food Bank to support other West Maui families.
Paddle for Hunger 2020
This year, Hawaiian Paddle Sports’ Paddle for Hunger fundraiser went virtual in support of the Maui Food Bank. Participants were encouraged to paddle around the island on stand-up paddle boards, canoes or surfboards. They clocked their time spent at sea, used GPS to plot their course and tagged photos to record their participation. This event has been helping local families since 2010, raising thousands in donations and celebrating the aloha spirit amongst Maui’s paddling community. hawaiianpaddlesport

Foundation donates $250,000 to Maui Food Bank

KAPALUA As a world-class sports event returned to Maui last week with the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions, the Sentry Insurance Foundation announced it donated $250,000 to the Maui Food Bank. The Maui Food Bank is the county’s primary safety net for hunger relief. It’s currently serving 10,000 people each week with emergency food distributions. Since Sentry became title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the mutual insurance company spent significant time on the island building relationships with local organizations, talking with local leaders about areas of need and becoming a part of the Maui community.

As our community continues the long wait for the high school in Kihei (mauka of the highway), at least we had assurance for almost a decade that when it does open, the keiki and everyone else walking or cycling to the school had safe passage via an under- or overpass of the Pi’ilani Highway.
Do you know why? A state Land Use Commission condition. What do you know about this statewide all-volunteer panel?
Kihei Community Association commences its 61st year of incorporation with our first membership meeting of this year, where we welcome the current chair of this commission, special guest Jonathan Likeke Scheuer, as well as Maui’s own Dick Mayer and Mark Hyde to discuss numerous aspects of the LUC and its effects on our area.

The Sentry Insurance Foundation announced a $250,000 donation to the Maui Food Bank on Tuesday.
The donation came in conjunction with the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions golf tournament that is set to play Thursday through Sunday at the Kapalua Plantation Course.
“The pandemic has been particularly devastating to Maui’s economy,” Pete McPartland, Sentry chairman of the board, president and CEO, said in a news release. “Unemployment rates here have been some of the highest in the nation. We wanted to help in a meaningful way supporting Maui County families and local businesses.”
