Afton Wolfe: Like many I knew, I grew up singing in church, and it’s the earliest memory I have – singing a duet with my Mom in a Christmas musical at

Mississippi. My folks were both musical (met in the marching band), and it was always around me, even more so than I appreciated at the time. I’ve always loved singing, and I started writing poetry or journaling or just releasing the valve on the verbal tank in my mind when I was really young as well. Then I put those together. If you ask a critic or music fan to define Americana, be prepared for an avalanche of diverse responses of opinion. Is the definition found in the pastoral lyrical sensibilities of a song? If so, then Fleet Foxes, Megafaun, and William Elliott Whitmore certainly qualify. Or is the genre better served by songwriters of a confessional ilk? Then welcome Bright Eyes, Mount Moriah, and Tift Merritt to the fold. Some think Americana acts need be of the downtrodden, sad-bastard variety. If that suits your qualifications, check out the Civil Wars and the venerable Will Oldham. However, if you want to keep things on the sunny side, then there are bands for you too: Del McCoury Band, Those Darlins, and Ry Cooder are there to keep the positivity flowing.

Over the past three weeks, the Cobb family has mounted a massive effort to buy the Elliston Place property that’s home to Exit/In, the historic club they own and operate. They’ve gotten vocal supportfrom members of Metro Council for their desire to preserve the culture of the venue as well as its building. The Cobbs have also received more than $224,000 in donations from more than 4,000 donors to sweeten the offer (backed by Grubb Properties’ Live Venue Recovery Fund) that they hope to make to AJ Capital Partners, the developer to whom the property went under contract.
