With a controversial royal interview once again in the public zeitgeist, there has been a predictable chorus of calls to abolish the monarchy or otherwise punt the House of Windsor into historical irrelevance. No, not this controversial interview, the other one.

In an interview broadcast Sunday with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, described leaving the royal orbit because of racist treatment, including the allegation that unspecified members of the Royal Family questioned how “dark” her baby would be. In the broadcast’s wake, both the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois led calls questioning Queen Elizabeth II’s role as Canadian Head of State. “I don’t see the benefit of the monarchy in Canadians’ lives,” said NDP leader Jagmeet Singh.

The Confederacy of Treaty Six sent a letter to the Queen expressing their concern over the vacant position. “The Chief Justice of Canada can sit in for a short period, but a concern arises when legislation is enacted that might affect us – what happens if the legislation ends up before the judge? It would be better to have a Governor General in place as soon as possible,” the letter reads. “We wanted to remind our treaty partner – the Crown – of our concern that at this time in the state of Canada having no representative of herself,” said Grand Chief Vernon Watchmaker.
