A new Grand Seiko creation powered by a high-beat movement offers a new perspective on the nature of time.
The dial is inspired by the slender and strikingly beautiful white birch trees that thrive in northern parts of Japan and that grow in profusion near the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi where this watch is made. When I opened up our Fratello mailbox this morning, I found Grand Seiko’s press release on this new SLG005 White Birch watch. I couldn’t help to think of the house where I grew up. In my memories, it was a large house with a nice garden and driveway. At the end of the driveway, where the road started, was a white birch.
I write in my memories, as in reality, the house wasn’t
that big. I realized this when the same house next door was offered for sale on a popular housing platform. But as a kid, you perceive things in a different way, perhaps. What I noticed when looking at our previous neighbor’s house for sale, is that our old house was also partly on the pictures. It looked so different, and a lot has changed. The white birch was also gone, I noticed. A pity, as its silvery hue gave the garden quite a bit of character, much in the same way as it does on the new Grand Seiko SLGH005.

Seiko has produced watches with dials inspired by the green moss of winter, the red leaves of autumn and the white peaks of Mount Hotaka. It has released a model whose dial colour mimics the mangrove swamps on Iriomote, an island in the Okinawa Prefecture, another said to evoke the dawn light over Tokyo and still another that “captures the beauty of cherry blossom at night”. Ask someone from Japan what s unique about their country and there’s a fair chance they’ll reply “it has four seasons”. That’s not as mad as it sounds: Japan’s seasons don’t slide into one another the way they do in the UK or Europe, they are separate and distinct, with their own individual festivals, produce and rituals, as well as seasonal plants, weather and crops.
