Montville  Dakota Partners has at last secured approval of its flood management certification application for a planned 72-unit housing development on Pink Row at the former Faria Beede Mill property. On Tuesday, Dakota Marketing Director Katie Cardillo offered an official statement on the news from the company, noting that construction should resume in the spring of this year. The Flood Management Certification will be issued after the expiration of the 30-day public notice, which should be around the end of February, the statement reads. The 30-day public notice was required as this project needed exemptions from certain state rules, which regulate building in a 500-year floodplain. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection conditionally approved the permit, based on our satisfaction of design changes requested. Once the Flood Management Certification is issued, the project can be re-started.

Several local school districts are slated to receive funding boosts through the federal coronavirus relief act to cover costs of education adjustments and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic. State Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague, announced funding for several school districts in her 19th state Senate district, including $8.5 million for Norwich, $1.19 million for Montville and $920,000 for Ledyard. State Rep. Anthony Nolan, D-New London, announced that the New London school district will receive $8.44 million in funding through the federal Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief Funds, or ESSER II. The funding is part of $492.4 million in the ESSER II Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act 2021 coming to the state, he said.

Laurel Ledge Farm owner Michelle Wilson, born 1957, was charged with nine counts of animal cruelty following a complaint from Montville Animal Control. She was arrested Sept. 24, 2020.
