Costa Rica helps digital nomads extend their stay
March 9, 2021
Digital nomads from the United States, Chile and Portugal highlight the advantages of living and working from Costa Rica
They mention natural beauty, the “gift of its people” and the country’s superior management of the pandemic against COVID-19
Their stays are for months and some add another year, thanks to the extensions granted by Migration and Foreigners
Costa Rica has become an ideal destination for foreigners who choose to work remotely. The country, they say, offers them adequate management of the pandemic and the possibility of combining the work of their countries of residence with surfing classes, trips to the mountains and the Pura Vida.
Costa Rica’s most popular national park is switching up its hours.
Starting April 1, Manuel Antonio National Park will remain open on Mondays in an effort to promote economic reactivation of the region. The park’s hours will be Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesdays) from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“This is another effort by the Government of the Republic with a view of supporting the economic reactivation of coastal areas and promoting responsible visits to the national parks and protected wild areas of the country,” said Andrea Meza, Environment Minister, in a statement issued by the Presidency.
Currently, Manuel Antonio is closed every Monday for trail maintenance.
A growing number of people have turned to the dream of a “digital nomad” lifestyle answering emails from the beach or the cloud forest as remote working goes mainstream during the pandemic.
Costa Rica hopes to attract more of these workers through a bill that would grant year-long visas for qualifying digital nomads.
If the bill is approved in the Legislative Assembly, remote workers could obtain a permit to stay for one year in Costa Rica, extendable for one additional year. They would also have the possibility of opening local bank accounts and could drive in Costa Rica using their country’s license, among other benefits.
