SPRING MILLS - The student assistance team in Berkeley County dates years back, the brainchild of former county teachers Janet and Warren McCrory, whose hearts ached to help their students and fellow teachers in any way possible. They taught at Hedgesville and did the Students Assistance Fund. It’s something where teachers all pay $1 a week to wear jeans, and we collect these funds,  Spring Mills Middle School teacher Barbara Starliper said. Anytime the students need something that they don’t have money for (the money goes toward). We’ve bought glasses, paid for medical expenses and different emergency needs like that. The big thing is really Christmas. We’ve always put up a Christmas tree and selected some kids and got parent permission and asked them some things they need and what their sizes are.
