While the COVID-19 pandemic has made some aspects of volunteerism and donation more challenging, there are still many ways to contribute to your community and beyond.
One wonderful example can be found with the Northern Michigan University School of Nursing, which is spreading the word about how students and area residents can become registered organ donors through the Gift of Life Campus Challenge.
The challenge is to see which college campus in Michigan can register the most organ donors by Feb. 18.
Michelle Andriacchi, NMU assistant professor of nursing, called the annual event “kind of a friendly competition” in a Wednesday Journal article by Christie Mastric.

Berenice Lorenzo knew at a young age she wanted to go to college.
She also knew she wanted to be the first in her family to earn a college degree.
As she worked her way through high school, though, she hit a roadblock. How could she pay for that degree? The cost just seemed too much.
That is, until she considered Gateway Technical College â which helped her dream to become a reality through the resources and support of the Gateway Promise program. Berenice is now well on her way to earning her Nursing degree and has become a student leader and face of the college to the community through her role as Kenosha Campus ambassador.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester teamed up with Santa Clause to hold a gift drive yesterday morning. Members handed out over 300 gifts to club family members while some kids got to get their picture taken with Santa himself.
The event was made possible by generous members of the Rochester community, as well as many businesses in the local area who contributed through the BGCR’s Amazon wish list, like oshiba, AT&T, Northwestern Mutual, Dr. Steven Damelio’s Office, Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, Power Management, RDG+Partners, CrossFit RSG, URMC Behavior Health & Wellness, and the MCC Student Nurses Association.
