Brookings report looks at long-term employment changes by state

DC and Massachusetts may experience smaller changes to their employment growth because of the pandemic than other states, based on a new Brookings report. Mark Muro, senior fellow and policy director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings, and research assistant Yang You looked at how employment may change across the US over 10 years. The analysis is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics recent projections that consider how the pandemic may affect employment. These charts highlight the employment situation since February 2020

Idaho and Utah have seen stronger employment recovery, and they had roughly the same number of jobs as they did in February 2020. The number of unemployed Americans who have been out of work for at least 27 weeks has been increasing over the past year. More and more Americans have been unemployed for longer than just a few weeks during the pandemic. Of the nearly 10 million Americans unemployed in February, 41.5%, or over 4 million Americans, were long-term unemployed. Gould said this rising number of long-term unemployment was devastating. The millions of Americans still receiving extended unemployment benefits provided by the federal government s stimulus actions in the past year also highlight the unemployment situation.
