It is tearful that this year Zimbabwe turns 41 amid growing fear among citizens, repression, human rights abuses, and closure of democratic space. Independence Day (April 18) is a day to celebrate, yet for many Zimbabweans it was just like any other ordinary day as it symbolises a betrayal by the liberation generation who, from liberators, have morphed into oppressors.
It is tragic therefore that in independent Zimbabwe the rulers have continued using the colonial legal system an instrument upon which officials based their conception of a new social order to suppress citizens. Independence was a product of a protracted liberation struggle mounted to ensure that there s an equal and just society in which fundamental human rights are respected; equal access to economic resources, land, and economic emancipation; and an end to minority rule. To date, several activists, including journalists, have suffered the State s heavy-handedness.

Ash deposits from La Soufriere volcano forced the closure of Barbados’ Supreme Court Complex for at least three days and some matters scheduled to be heard in the lower courts were postponed or will have to be done virtually.
A release from registrar Barbara Cooke-Alleyne said since the ash can have a negative impact on the central air system of the building on Whitepark, St Michael, it is important to monitor that but also “maintain a clean, properly functioning ventilation and air conditioning system for all the occupants of the building”.
“As a result, it is recommended that the Supreme Court Complex be closed for at least three days. During this time, the technicians and the scientists will be working together to ensure that the ventilation and air-conditioning systems are analysed to determine the impact of the ash particles on the system and recommend what actions are required to clean it,” the release said.

The Magistrates’ Courts of District “B” and District “F”, located at the Eric Holder Jr, Municipal Complex, Blackman’s, St. Joseph, which were recently closed for cleaning and sanitisation, have reopened for business.
Operations at the complex returned to normal from Wednesday, March 31.
