Maynard police chief supports most of police reform bill

Wicked Local Gov. Charlie Baker signed a new police reform bill into law Dec. 31, enacting landmark changes to law enforcement training, oversight and best practices statewide.  “An Act Relative to Justice, Equity and Accountability in Law Enforcement in the Commonwealth” follows months of rallying, re-examination and debate surrounding policing in Massachusetts. The changes outlined in the new law, which impact police officers and departments throughout the state, will roll out over the coming months.  The bill sets standards for policies and training, use of force, response to protests and demonstrations, no-knock warrants, police misconduct, school resource officers and more. In Maynard, Police Chief Michael Noble, said he supports most of the bill, at least in theory.

Marion Police Dept. announces three promotions Wicked Local MARION - Chief Richard Nighelli has announced the promotions of three members of the department. Sgt. Jeffrey Habicht was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and Officers Larry C. Savery and Sean Day were each promoted to the rank of sergeant. All three were appointed to their new ranks during the virtual Marion Board of Selectmen meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19. I d like to congratulate Lt. Habicht, Sgt. Savery and Sgt. Day on their promotions, Chief Nighelli said. Each brings several years of experience and valuable skills to their new positions and I am confident that they will continue to serve the Marion community well.

Springfield Commissioner Cheryl C. Clapprood and the heads of the department’s two unions each said this week that they welcome police reform in general. But they questioned how the law is being rolled out, and worried about a number of uncertainties not stipulated within the bill’s 129 pages.

Walsh Retiring Thursday, Interim Chief Named in Great Barrington After four decades of service to the town of Great Barrington as a police officer, Great Barrington Police Chief, William Walsh will officially retire from his position on December 24th. He served the last 37 as chief. Walsh’s final day of work will be Wednesday, Dec. 23rd, the day before his 65th birthday. As the town’s search for a new police chief moves toward its final phase, town manager Mark Pruhenski has appointed Sgt. Paul Storti as interim chief. Storti has served with the Great Barrington Police Department for 25 years, and since 2010 has held the rank of sergeant. Storti will hold the position as interim chief until a search committee comes up with a permanent replacement for Walsh. The search for a new chief has been underway since early fall.
