Men s Weekend Watch: The Stakes Are Raised

The Virginia-Syracuse rivalry could not be closer, historically. The Cavs and Orange have split the series 18-18. Each team has scored 466 goals. The last five games have been one-goal affairs, including the last time they met a 15-14 Virginia overtime victory in 2019. The teams meet 6 p.m. Saturday on ACC Network, the nightcap to a full day of lacrosse. It’s a game reflective of the talent in the ACC and also the state of lacrosse in 2021.  Virginia (3-0) is riding high after a full slate of preseason practices and three games in February. Syracuse (0-1), which was much more limited in preseason practice and did not have any games in the early part of February, is looking to bounce back after a disappointing opener to a promising season in which a championship is the expectation.

Men s Lacrosse: 9th-ranked Rutgers Preview

Ohio State started 2021 off with a bang last week, defeating an underprepared Johns Hopkins squad 14-8. Ohio State, despite its own limitations on practice, looked sharper, hungrier, and more prepared in the opener than we have seen in a while. It s a great start to what will hopefully be a tremendous season. The past is past, however, which means we now move to the next game against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. And it s a doozy. Despite some struggles overall recently, the last game Ohio State played against Rutgers was an easy victory for the Knights. The Buckeyes got behind big early, and never really looked like they would mount a comeback as Rutgers cruised to a 14-6 win.

Army, Rutgers Shake Things Up in Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Men s Top 20

Mon Feb 22 2021 | Patrick Stevens | College PHOTO BY RICH BARNES Syracuse didn’t lose in 2020 before the pandemic brought things to a halt, and the Orange wasn’t a likely candidate to get blown out at all this year. And then Sunday’s season opener happened. Army drubbed Syracuse 18-11 in the most jolting result of the young 2021 campaign. It wasn’t that the Black Knights won; they’re smart, tough and schematically sound. Army usually creates headaches for Syracuse and has pulled off some victories in the Carrier Dome over the last dozen years. How it happened was another matter.
